Description: TASK is a nonprofit organization established as the Family Empowerment Center (FEC) by the California Department of Education (CDE) for Los Angeles and Orange Counties. It is also designated as a Parent Training and Information Center (PTIC) for the Southern California counties of Los Angeles, San Diego, Imperial, Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino by the Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP). Our team is composed of parents, guardians, and caregivers of children with disabilities dedicated to empowering individuals and their families. We offer comprehensive training and support to help them navigate the complexities of special education, disability-related services, and assistive technology (AT). Our expertise lies in guiding individuals with disabilities from birth to 26 years of age, as well as their families, through the intricacies of the special education system. We aim to ensure that families are well-informed about their rights, understand the procedures for requesting assessments, are equipped with strategies for preparing for the Individualized Education Program (IEP), and receive guidance on transition planning.

Family Empowerment Centers (FECs) provide training and information to families of children and young adults with disabilities, between the ages of 3 and 22 in California. These nonprofit organizations offer specialized training, peer-to-peer support, information and referral services. They assist parents to better understand their child’s educational and developmental needs, effectively communicate with service providers, serve as a resource for the IEP process, participate in school reform and improvement activities, promote alternative dispute resolution, and support positive relationships between parents and professionals. Services available through each FEC vary based on the needs of the community.
