Description: Family Resource Center of the Redwoods provides a welcoming, safe and nurturing environment to strengthen and support healthy relationships for children and families in Del Norte County. We provide Parent education and support groups starting with prenatal classes and postpartum support groups and following through parenting classes, Parent Cafe's and beyond. We support families of children with special needs through developmental screenings for 0-5 year olds, oral health education, independent living skill building workshops, nutrition education and cooking classes, IEP training, communication classes including ASL and Speech Therapy, and parent support for Early Start families, among other specialty training and workshops. We follow the Five Protective Factors Framework, helping to build social connections, knowledge of child development, social and emotional development and self-regulation skills, concrete supports in times of need, and parental resilience.
We host and provide professional development workshops for other local nonprofits that work with families of all abilities such as the Del Norte Child Care Council and CASA of Del Norte as well as our local preschool teachers, child care providers, and early educators. Our organization also hosts and participates in various free community outreach events annually including a Community Baby Shower, Father Appreciation Day, May Day Play Day, Craft Days, Field Day Fridays throughout the summer, food distribution days (summer and winter break meal programs) and many more outreach events for the community.

Family Empowerment Centers (FECs) provide training and information to families of children and young adults with disabilities, between the ages of 3 and 22 in California. These nonprofit organizations offer specialized training, peer-to-peer support, information and referral services. They assist parents to better understand their child’s educational and developmental needs, effectively communicate with service providers, serve as a resource for the IEP process, participate in school reform and improvement activities, promote alternative dispute resolution, and support positive relationships between parents and professionals. Services available through each FEC vary based on the needs of the community.
