Description: Ability Path's Family Resource Center of San Mateo County provides parent to parent support, information, education, resources and referrals to parents of children between the ages of 0-22 who have a disability. We provide monthly Autism Support Groups in English and a monthly Spanish Support Group as well as numerous trainings via Zoom on topics such as Transition from Early Start to Special Education; The Lanterman Act, Generic Services such as SSI, IHSS, CalAim; How to Read Your Child's IEP; Transition to Adult Services and more. Our team is bilingual English/Spanish and use The Language Line for other languages. We distribute a monthly e-newsletter and offer a binder to English and Spanish speaking families to help support the organization of their documents, we provide community outreach and accompany IEP's for eligible families. We are a small team serving the entire county of SMC and are staffed by parents of children or adults with disabilities.

What are Family Empowerment Centers (FECs)?

Family Empowerment Centers (FECs) provide training and information to families of children and young adults with disabilities, between the ages of 3 and 22 in California. These nonprofit organizations offer specialized training, peer-to-peer support, information and referral services. They assist parents to better understand their child’s educational and developmental needs, effectively communicate with service providers, serve as a resource for the IEP process, participate in school reform and improvement activities, promote alternative dispute resolution, and support positive relationships between parents and professionals. Services available through each FEC vary based on the needs of the community.
